A Few Helpful Tips to Keep in Mind
Keep in touch with the 32BJ Fund office
After you retire, it’s a good idea to keep in touch with the 32BJ Fund office to:
- Change your address.
- Change your Death Benefit beneficiary designation.
- Start or change your direct deposit.
- Get a replacement copy of your recent Form 1099-R for your annual IRS income tax filing.
- Get a letter with proof of your pension benefits.
- Provide notification of your spouse’s death.
As well, your spouse or a close friend or relative should notify the Fund office of your death immediately upon your death. The Fund office is also here to answer any questions you may have about benefits that may be payable to your spouse or beneficiary after your death.
Keep in touch with the Social Security office - ssa.gov
After you retire, it’s a good idea to visit the Social Security website to manage the information in your account and to request information. Through the website, you are able to:
- Change your address.
- Start or change your direct deposit.
- Get a replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S for tax season.
- Get a letter with proof of your benefits from the Social Security office.
- Review amount of your Social Security payments and any deductions.
You will be asked to create an account on ssa.gov to view or change your personal information and to view your benefit information.
Keep in touch with the Medicare office - ssa.gov
After you retire, it’s a good idea to visit the Medicare website to manage the information in your account and to request information. Through the website, you are able to:
- Get a replacement Medicare card.
- Change your address.
- Get Medicare forms (claim forms, coverage change forms, appeals forms).
- Find a Doctor.
- Learn how to get help with Medicare costs.
- File a complaint or appeal.
You will be asked to create an account on MyMedicare.gov to view or change your personal information and to view your coverage information.
Use Direct Deposit
The Fund office offers its pensioners and beneficiaries the ability to have access to their monthly pension sooner through Direct Deposit into their bank account. The rewards of Direct Deposit are:
- You don’t have to go to the bank to deposit checks.
- Your money is automatically deposited into your account on time, every time!
- Direct Deposit payments never get lost.
- Problems with Direct Deposit, which are rare, are quickly resolved through a phone call.
- Direct Deposit gives you access to your money earlier than check deposits since there is no waiting for checks to clear.
